Post-Market Analysis: August 28, 2026

Welcome to the after-market commentary for Friday, August 28, 2026. Let's dive right into the charts and review this volatile end-of-week session.

1. Index Review: S&P 500 (ES) & Nasdaq

  • S&P 500 Futures (ES): The session was dominated by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at 10:00 AM, which introduced a decidedly hawkish tone regarding potential future interest rate hikes. Although the ES initially attempted a brief rally toward the previous August 19th high (around 7,750), it faced aggressive rejection near 11:30 AM. Prices rolled over back toward 7,726, remaining trapped inside the broader August balance range.
  • Nasdaq: Mirroring the ES, the Nasdaq experienced a sharp intraday reversal following early optimism. Tech indices faced headwinds as rate hike probabilities for the September 16th meeting jumped from 35.5% to 57.5%, putting pressure on growth-heavy valuations and pushing the index lower into the close.

2. Commodities: Gold, Silver, & Crude Oil

  • Gold: Gold experienced a swift and sharp sell-off today, giving back roughly 65% of its recent weekly gains and dropping past $4,650. Despite the steep intraday correction, gold still heads into month-end hovering above its crucial structural support at $4,620, keeping its broader monthly recovery intact.
  • Silver: Silver suffered a severe 4.5% pullback, effectively delivering an engulfing candle that erased five sessions of prior gains and testing the key $67.00 pivotal level. Like gold, silver's monthly candle remains structurally resilient, but the immediate momentum has shifted back to the bears.
  • Crude Oil: Energy markets continued to navigate shifting macroeconomic expectations, helping set the stage for broader inflation and interest rate reassessments across the board.

3. Fixed Income & Bitcoin

  • Bond Market (TLT): Fixed income took a heavy blow as short- and medium-term yields spiked immediately following Chair Warsh's hawkish remarks. Given the clear mismatch between market expectations and the Fed's newly signaled stance, our TLT long position was quickly exited at a small loss to manage risk, as the 5.15% to 5.20% yield threshold was reclaimed by sellers.
  • Bitcoin: Bitcoin pulled back roughly 2.85%, compressing back toward the lower end of its recent consolidation zone between $75,000 and $80,000. Traders are closely monitoring whether it can hold current support ahead of the September open.

4. Sector Rotation & Equities

  • Bifurcation in Equities: Today’s session saw a stark market bifurcation. While interest-rate-sensitive areas like semiconductors (SMH down 3.4%, Nvidia down 4.5%), cybersecurity, and hardware sold off sharply, mega-cap hyperscalers (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon) and traditional bank stocks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan) showed relative resilience or gains as capital rotated toward safety.
  • Korean ETF: Maintained its ground near 180, showing relative stability despite the broader domestic macro turbulence.

Closing Note

With August drawing to a close and September right around the corner, market participants will be reassessing positioning in light of a newly hawkish Federal Reserve. Have a wonderful weekend, and we will see you on Sunday evening for the pre-open commentary!
